NY TIMES: "A recent study, by the Natural Resources Defense Council, concluded that (DVR cable) boxes consumed $3 billion in electricity per year in the United States — and that 66 percent of that power is wasted when no one is watching and shows are not being recorded. That is more power than the state of Maryland uses over 12 months."
For what it’s worth, my cable provider’s boxes go into “standby” mode automatically around 2 AM, but damn that’s a lot of electricity.
DVR in the cloud is where it’s all going. Hulu (if they make it) and Netflix are where it’s at. Why DVR something locally when it can all be available instantly from the cloud? You get a la carte TV and reduced energy use at the same time.
Oh yeah, it’s currently way, way less expensive than cable/satellite.

That ‘standby’ mode is exactly the wastage they’re referring to. It’s the same with TVs - when you shut off your TV but don’t unplug it, it too continues to consume electricity.
